About Lighthouse Kids
In the Beginning…
In spring of 2003 I (Mike) was approached by a member of the church I was attending (The Lighthouse Community Church) in Harpersville, Al.
I started to help in the children’s church but right away I felt God tugging on me about what this ministry could be. I had no experience in the ministry but one morning I sat down at my computer and I began to write a worship guide for kids. I also started checking out music and lyrics so that we could sing.
For the next few months I felt like such a dork. The music was out of date, during the stories the kids looked at me like I was speaking Chinese, and I ended almost every service with a rendition of Father Abraham. Wait a minute, I was a dork!
Then I started hanging out with the pre-teens! This changed my life, and ministry, forever. I began to listen to their stories, find out what they liked, and letting them get involved in every area of the children’s church. Next thing you know, we are growing and we haven’t stopped since.
The ministry now is nowhere near what it was back then. But I still remember the lesson I learned. If you want to minister to people then you need to get to know them. And I mean them, not a book about them, or the music and shows they like, but them.
I love what I do! The biggest reason for this is the relationships I have with the pre-teen age boys and girls of our ministry. I love to hear what they have to say when we really get it right. I love it when they really like the music, the colors, and the skits. I love that they have a ministry that is for them and by them. I am so thankful for that spring day and all of the joy it brought my way.
